How Liposuction Works
Your liposuction will be performed in the best conditions: it is an outpatient procedure, and will be performed in a fully-accredited surgical facility under general or epidural anesthesia from a board-certified anesthesiologist. First, small incisions or “poke holes” will be made in the target area to allow the suction devices to access the fat. The incisions are small enough to be inconspicuous when they heal.
Dr. Zeidler and Dr. Berkowitz use the tumescent technique, where a saline solution containing various medications is pumped into the treatment area in order to prepare the fat for removal, decrease bleeding, and to deliver a dose of pain medication to help with recovery. A small tube called a cannula will then be inserted through these incisions, and gently moved back and forth in a careful pattern to remove fat.
The Science of Hydrasolve and Vaser Lipo
Hydrasolve is the latest advancement in liposuction technology, and Aesthetx is proud to be one of the first practices in California to offer it. With Hydrasolve, fat is easily and gently liquefied for an easier extraction that leaves surrounding tissues untouched. Using a cannula, a saline solution is pumped into the treatment area. The heated solution then liquefies and separates the fat, with the solution being the perfect temperature to affect fat and only fat. Thanks to Hydrasolve, the fat is then easily separated from other tissue and extracted without harming the fat cells. In turn, Hydrasolve leaves patients with smoother, more toned results. Because of how gentle Hydrasolve is on the tissues, it is the ideal type of liposuction to be used to obtain for a fat transfer procedure.
VASER Lipo utilizes ultrasound technology to help the liposuction specifically target fat without disturbing other tissues in the body, thus leading to a faster recovery and a more precise treatment. After the tumescent saline solution is injected, a small probe is inserted into the treatment area that delivers ultrasound energy to break up the fat while sparing other tissue. The ultrasound energy sends out small vibrations into the treatment area, loosening the fat cells from other tissues and melting them, essentially killing the fat cells. VASER Lipo is perfect for more difficult areas like underneath the breasts and the upper back. Aesthetx offers the VASER Lipo because its capabilities for greater control and predictable results. Because it liquefies fat cells, it is not often used in conjunction with a fat transfer procedure.
Candidates for Liposuction
The main mechanism of liposuction is the removal of unsightly fat, but not skin. That’s why the best candidates for liposuction are patients with great skin elasticity, so that the skin can wrap around the body again with ease after the procedure. As beautiful as the results for Dr. Zeidler and Dr. Berkowitz’s liposuction can be, the best candidates for liposuction should also have realistic expectations for their results. Liposuction should never be considered as an alternative method to weight loss, and good candidates should be within 20 pounds of their ideal weight and have a healthy body mass index.
Recovery from Liposuction
VASER Lipo and Hydrasolve both offer a quicker recovery than traditional liposuction techniques—about 1-2 weeks off of work or school and 2-4 weeks of avoiding strenuous activities. Your Aesthetx surgeon will help create a recovery plan for you, but know that our Dr. Zeidler and Dr. Berkowitz consider each procedure to be a collaboration, and will be heavily invested in your aftercare and well-being. Your surgeon will follow your recovery closely, for months even, to make sure your healing is going as successfully as possible. You will be given support garments to help with swelling, which will be worn for 3-6 weeks.
Some swelling, bruising, and lumpiness is to be expected, and Aesthetx recommends lymphatic drainage massage to smooth out your results.
To further refine your liposuction results, Aesthetx offers the chance to complement your results with the postoperative VASER Shape ultrasound procedure. VASER Shape non-surgically delivers ultrasound energy to further smooth and tighten your new body contour. A probe is placed eternally on the skin to heat the underlying tissue to help smooth out the results. This is a nice adjunct after surgery to get the smoothest possible results.
