Berkowitz Becomes of One First US Surgeons to Offer State-of-the-Art Comeg Ultrasonic Tools

Aesthetx has always prided itself on building plastic surgery on a foundation of innovation. Through state-of-the-art technology, advanced techniques, or their novel approach to plastic surgery, Aesthetx aims to improve the patient experience and, more importantly, create exquisite results. That’s why we’re proud to announce that Dr. Berkowitz will be bringing an incredible new technology to our practice: Comeg Ultrasonic Tips for Piezo Power Tools. Best of all—he’ll be one of the very first surgeons in the US to do so. With this new development, Aesthetx once again solidifies their position in the vanguard of plastic surgery.

A Giant in the World of Rhinoplasty

Aesthetx is now proud to offer Comeg Medical’s new ultrasonic tips for Piezo power tools—the very first of its kind. These ultrasonic tips are designed to increase a surgeon’s control and precision during rhinoplasty. While traditional nose surgery techniques used hammers and chisels to break bones, Piezo power tools with ultrasonic energy can intricately shape the structures of the nose without harming the nearby tissues, resulting in a faster, more comfortable healing process for the patient.

Dr. Berkowitz was already renowned for using Piezo Power Tools for rhinoplasty, but by incorporating the ultrasonic tips, he takes nose surgery to another level of precision.

A History of Innovation

Before Dr. Berkowitz had the insight to use them for rhinoplasty procedures, Piezo power tools were only used for neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery. In fact, Dr. Berkowitz was the first to introduce them to the Rhinoplasty Society, the largest organization for rhinoplasty-oriented surgeons where he’s also a board member. He then spent the next few years helping developing and popularizing the use of Piezo power tools for nose surgery and working with visionaries like Dr. Olivier Gerbault to further refine his technique.

In the years since, Dr. Berkowitz has taught fellow surgeons about the benefits of Piezo power tools in countless national symposiums such as the Rhinoplasty Symposium and ASAPS meetings and written a textbook on his rhinoplasty technique (featuring a different instrument).

At the heart of any aesthetic surgical procedure is innovation; the field of plastic surgery itself is an incredible advancement in the history of medicine. With Dr. Berkowitz’s adoption of ultrasonic tips, we take plastic surgery one step further into the future. To learn more about Aesthetx’s leading edge procedures, contact us for a consultation.

The Advantages of using Power Tools with Rhinoplasty

Dr. B in surgery performing a rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty is as popular as ever, which means the demand for newer technology and more advanced techniques is more important than it’s ever been. The process of working on the bone and cartilage in a patient’s nose is quite complicated and surgeons have to ensure that their patients are satisfied with the results. In order to execute the surgery in a way to reduce the chances of damage or unhappy patients, the practice of performing rhinoplasty has seen many advancements along the way.

The reshaping of noses is a practice that has been around for hundreds of years, going as far back as 1000 AD. In the 16th century, “nose jobs” were primarily performed to replace or reshape one’s nose in the aftermath of battle or in the case of facial deformities. Thankfully, surgery became a little more refined when in the 19th century, practices for pain relief and infection reduction were implemented through the use of anesthesia and antiseptics. The most significant change to the way rhinoplasty was performed was introduced by Dr. Jacques Joseph, the “Father of Modern Anesthetic Surgery,” when he created the process of performing rhinoplasty by breaking and reshaping the bone of the nose using a hammer and chisel.

This technique became the standard procedure for rhinoplasty and the practice remained relatively unchanged for decades. Which is why with the increased desire for rhinoplasty in recent years, a need was felt for tools that would increase the precision of the surgical process and offer a gentler approach. This need was filled with the introduction of electric power tools.

Surgical Blueprint: This is how we measure and plan rhinoplasty at Aesthetx.

Electric power tools have been around for years but were mostly used for dental and oral procedures to deal with fillings, extractions and so forth.  Now power tools have been adopted by the plastic surgery industry to more precisely and carefully shape noses during rhinoplasty. A new technology has been introduced that ensures minimum soft tissue damage and makes it easier to deal with boney structures and hard cartilage of the nose.

This groundbreaking procedure is called the Piezo technique; Piezo is a piece of equipment that easily cuts through bone but recognizes soft tissues, which causes it to stop cutting and vibrate in place, ensuring less bleeding and damage to the inside of the nose. Another benefit to this technique is a quicker recovery time as these tools can be much gentler during rhinoplasty.

Popular in Europe, it wasn’t until recently that Piezo equipment was utilized in the U.S. by Aesthetx’s own, Dr. Laurence Berkowitz. He first used the tool in 2010 for a chin enhancement surgery but was unable to implement it permanently as it was only available for purchase in the United States by dental surgeons. In 2015, a medical equipment company made the equipment for sale in the US, prompting Dr. Berkowitz to adopt the technique and focus on utilizing it for rhinoplasty surgeries.

Dr. Berkowitz was recently featured in an article in the Huffington Post detailing his innovative use of new technologies in rhinoplasty. Dr. Berkowitz Joins Faculty of Dallas Rhinoplasty Symposium

Aesthetx is incredibly proud to be led by two thought leaders who continue to inspire new generations of plastic surgery masters. In fact, our very own Dr. Berkowitz was recently invited to teach a new generation of rhinoplasty experts at the 34th annual Dallas Rhinoplasty Symposium. Though he’s traveled the world as an educator for the latest plastic surgery techniques and devices, Dr. Berkowitz was honored to join the renowned rhinoplasty symposium for the very first time as a faculty member.

About the Dallas Rhinoplasty Symposium

Even in its 34th year, the Dallas Rhinoplasty Symposium still attracts hundreds of participants from all over the globe. With a focus on only the most advanced, proven techniques, the symposium aims to teach participants everything about rhinoplasty, from basic techniques to the most state-of-the-art improvements and refinements of traditional techniques. Many participants are post-graduate residents and practicing plastic surgeons who hope to improve their technique with the help of primary and secondary rhinoplasty masters like Dr. Berkowitz.

A Lifelong Educator

As a faculty member, Dr. Berkowitz used his years of expertise and status as an innovator to educate participants on one of the newest devices that’s changing the field of rhinoplasty: Piezo electric tools. Dr. Berkowitz was the very first faculty member to introduce the use of power tools as a superior tool for nose reshaping into the teaching course. Dr. Berkowitz showed the many benefits of using Piezo electric tools: power tools are precise enough to allow for more refined and predictable results, result in less trauma to the tissue, and cause less bruising and swelling than traditional techniques. The Aesthetx private surgery center is currently equipped with the latest Piezo electric tools.

A Master of Rhinoplasty

He’s been a huge figure in the world of rhinoplasty for some time, so it’s not surprising to see why Dr. Berkowitz was chosen to present at the Dallas Rhinoplasty symposium. Dr. Berkowitz currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Rhinoplasty Society. A consummate educator, he’s toured the world to speak about his state-of-the-art techniques and most recently taught a six-part course on the complete guide to rhinoplasty for the Plastic Surgery Education Network (PSEN.) He’s also authored book chapters on rhinoplasty and has had his work featured in the media and renowned publications all over the world.

In addition to his renowned work and illustrious career, Dr. Berkowitz is also a compassionate and caring doctor. For a chance to work with him and the esteemed Dr. Zeidler, contact Aesthetx now, for a consultation.
