Breast Augmentation: 5 Questions to Ask Your Plastic Surgeon Before Surgery

Breast augmentation, also known as an augmentation mammoplasty or a boob job, is the number one, most popular aesthetic procedure we do at Aesthetx. This is a procedure that increases breast size and shape using breast implants. We’re here to give you all the information you need to pick the best breast enhancement surgeon.

There are various search results when you google “breast augmentation near me” and it can be overwhelming, especially when you’re initially starting your research. We want to help you know what to be looking for when you research a surgeon to help you achieve natural-looking, safe and effective results.

The goal of the consultation process is to establish a relationship and understanding between you and your surgeon to ensure it’s a good match. During this appointment you should gain an understanding of the doctor’s qualifications and expertise. Once you have narrowed down a short list of breast augmentation surgeons to interview, here are five questions to ask each prospective doctor to determine if they are the best choice.

1. What Board Certifications Have You Earned?

Dr. Zeidler is a breast expert as well as board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and recertifies every ten years. She also teaches internationally and received her medical degree from University of California, San Francisco.

She has undertaken years of hands-on training to achieve the best and safest outcomes in breast surgery. She has demonstrated her knowledge and skill in aesthetic surgery by successfully passing rigorous written and oral exams. Additionally, she has performed hundreds of breast surgeries including aesthetic and reconstruction. Her background in reconstruction gives her more than a comprehensive understanding of the complexities of the human body; it allows her to fully understand exactly how significantly aesthetic surgery can change someone’s life for the better.

2. Where Will You Perform My Breast Surgery?

You should ask to take a tour of where each surgeon will perform your breast augmentation surgery. It should be an accredited ambulatory surgery center, hospital surgical suite, or surgical facility. Many reputable plastic surgery practices boast an on-site state-of-the-art surgical suite within their facility, making comfort, safety, and privacy a priority. We perform surgical procedures at our fully accredited  Aesthetx Surgery Center. This allows us to ensure that every detail of your operation is managed by our team of highly trained and dedicated perioperative specialists. Patients enjoy a very private experience with private pre-operative and recovery rooms. You also can feel confident in the safety in the hands of board certified anesthesiologists.

3. Am I a Candidate for Breast Augmentation Surgery?

There are a few guidelines for an excellent breast augmentation candidate. Women seeking breast augmentation often feel their breasts are too small for their body shape. Or they may have issues with symmetry they wish to correct.

Undergoing breast augmentation with implants can be a restorative process for women who have lost breast firmness and volume after having children. Some patients seek a breast revision when a previous surgery did not live up to their expectations.

Women considering this surgery should be in good overall health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations for the operations. At Aesthetx, Dr. Zeidler and her team will review your medical history and assess your aesthetic goals to determine if breast augmentation is right for you.

4. How Can I Ensure the Best Result?

Following post and pre-procedure instructions ensure amazing results after surgery. These instructions are vital for rapid healing and avoiding post-surgical complications. Your recovery time and results will be optimal by following our instructions.

We suggest no strenuous exercise or heavy lifting 3 weeks after surgery. Walking is fine immediately post procedure and most patients are fine returning to work 5-7 days after the procedure and can drive around 7 days after surgery.

After the first week, depending on what implant you choose, we will have you start moving the implants to aid in the settlement of the breasts within the breast pocket. We encourage patients to participate in a range of motion exercises to mobilize their shoulder joints to prevent discomfort.

Additionally, patients are provided a bra that is measured specifically to you. This bra will be worn to accommodate the early postoperative period. This is worn for 3 weeks all of the time and then another 3 weeks just half of the time. The surgical bra will help keep the breasts supported and reduce the post procedure swelling.

5. What Scarring Should I Expect?

Healing is unique for each patient, but all women should expect some scarring after surgery. The location and visibility of post-surgical scarring will depend on your surgeon’s incision techniques.

Available options include following the breast crease, at the armpit, and around the areola. Ultimately, the incision technique will depend on your chosen implant type and cosmetic goals.  Scarring visibility will diminish over time, and you can keep it to a minimum with surgical skill and post-surgery wound care.

Additionally, you can opt-in to laser scar removal once the incision has healed to further fade the scars and utilize silicone sheets to help prevent keloid scarring. Through our extensive scar therapy program patients notice reduced scarring following our regimen. Our extensive scar therapy program is introduced two weeks before surgery and will carry on after the first postoperative appointment and continue for 6 weeks with topical tape and healing cream. After 6 weeks the patient will transition to scar therapy with a silicone based product which has been shown to be the very best for reducing scars.
