Woman sitting down outside

We all age, it’s that simple. But how we age? That’s up to us. Today, thanks to modern advances in cosmetic medicine and a much deeper understanding of the factors that go into cellular aging, we have more power than ever to maintain youthful, gorgeous skin.

The first line of defense begins at home, where your skin care regimen, diet, and lifestyle all come into play. If you’re looking to go the extra mile, modern aesthetic medicine can help supplement your efforts and turn back the clock on aging.

New laser treatments allow the Aesthetx team and other qualified plastic surgeons to help engage your body’s natural healing mechanisms and literally increase the growth of collagen and elastin (two critical components of glowing skin).

Below, we’ve broken down what you need to do at home and the in-office treatments that can keep you looking your very best.

Anti-Aging Skin Care, Step By Step

Before we tackle the skin care steps you should be adopting into your everyday life, it’s essential to understand some other factors that go into the visible signs of aging. First and foremost: sun exposure. If there is one thing to focus on, it’s avoiding direct sunlight as much as possible (especially between 12-3 pm when UV rays are strongest). Ultraviolet radiation damages the top layers of skin, causing an increase in free radicals, which encourage early wrinkling, uneven pigmentation, and skin laxity.

Sleep, hydration, and stress are two of the other most significant contributors to aging. If you want your skin to look healthy, you have to give your body the time and tools it needs to heal naturally. Getting eight hours of sleep a night, drinking water throughout the day, and managing stress levels will have a significant effect on your long-term health and skin quality. Meditation, mindfulness, and similar emotional management tools have been proven to lower stress, improve immune system functioning, focus, and overall well-being.

And now, onto skin care. Things get a bit nuanced here as every person needs a slightly different skin care routine to perfectly compliment their skin type, lifestyle, and age. For instance, powerful anti-aging skin care products such as Retinol can provide stunning results. But, they might not be right if you have particularly sensitive or oily skin, as in these cases, Retinol can increase irritation. Therefore, it’s essential to always do your research before beginning to use a new product, and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call our expert team.

In general, though, here’s the ideal anti-aging skin care regimen:

Morning and Night

In the morning, start by using a gentle hydrating cleanser. You can mix these up based on your personal preferences and the time of year. For instance, foaming cleansers are a great refreshing way to keep your skin clear all summer long, but they might not provide the extra moisture needed, come winter. If you’re looking for an alternative, consider a cream or milk cleanser with organic botanical ingredients.

After cleansing, apply the toner of your choice. There are nearly infinite options available, so have fun experimenting as you find the perfect smell and formula for you. L’Occitane’s Immortelle Precious Essential Water is a great product to begin with, as it’s alcohol-free and harnesses the natural power of Immortelle blossoms and a dynamic Hyaluronic Acid complex to improve natural glow and evenness.

Next, it’s time for serums. Here, again, it’s a matter of personal choice. Quality counts when it comes to choosing your serum, though, and we only get one face–so why not treat it well. Vitamin C serums are particularly useful in helping slow free radicals and providing a rich dose of antioxidants to help rejuvenate and restore skin cells. We have been particularly loving OLEHENRIKSEN’s Truth Serum.

If your skin can handle further moisture, applying a secondary retinol serum two to three times a week can provide even further rejuvenation.

After your serums have been absorbed (two to five minutes), depending on the time of day, it’s either time for a light moisturizer and your daily SPF or a rich night cream. Moisture goes fast, and there are plenty of affordable options that provide gentle and natural hydration all day long. CeraVe, which is found in most drug stores, makes a great daily moisturizer that’s gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin types.

Look for a lightweight mineral sunscreen with an SPF of 60+, such as ISDIN’s award-winning ERYFOTONA ACTINICA sunscreen. Using this daily (multiple times per day if you’re spending hours outdoors) is the number one way to help prevent wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and skin sagging.

At night, apply a rich hydrating night cream of your choosing. Retinol can be a great help but is by no means necessary. Ideally, look for natural ingredients free of sulfates or parabens.
